How to Choose the Right Ribbon Width and Length for Your Printer

Choose a ribbon at least as wide as the label, usually 3–5mm wider, rather than the printer's full width. Zebra says a narrower ribbon leaves printhead areas unprotected and TSC suggests 3–5mm wider. Then pick a roll length the printer holds, and a core and winding that match the roll already working.

The most common mistake in ribbon purchasing: ordering ribbon that matches your printer's maximum width instead of your label width.

If your label is 50mm wide, you don't need a 110mm ribbon. About 60mm of the ribbon's width goes unused on every label.

The rule: the ribbon should be at least as wide as the label (Zebra), and usually 3–5mm wider (TSC), so the printhead never runs on bare label edge. Zebra says areas of the printhead not protected by ribbon may wear out prematurely. There is no need to go to the printer's full width for a narrow label.

Measure the label across the roll, at right angles to the direction it feeds through the printer — this is the print width. Don't confuse it with label length (the feed direction).

For a 100mm × 150mm shipping label that feeds lengthwise, the print width is 100mm. Your ribbon should be 105–110mm wide.

Ribbon length determines how many labels you print per roll. Longer ribbon rolls mean fewer changeovers and lower cost-per-label.

Example: a 300m ribbon prints roughly 2,000 labels at 150mm label height. A 600m ribbon prints 4,000 labels with one changeover instead of two.

For high-volume operations (logistics, e-commerce), longer rolls save significant downtime. For smaller operations, shorter rolls (50–100m) avoid waste.

The core is the cardboard tube inside the ribbon roll. Your printer accepts one specific core size — check your printer manual.

Half-inch (½") core: TSC says smaller printers often use it, and the Zebra GK420T is one example.

One-inch (1") core: TSC calls it standard. The Zebra ZT231 lists a 25mm (1 inch) core, and examples include the Zebra ZT230, Sato CL4NX Plus and TSC TTP-244 Pro.

Outside wound (ink faces outward) — the Zebra GK420T and ZT231 and the Honeywell PC42t take only ribbon coated on the outside, and many other desktop printers do too.

Inside wound (ink faces inward) — accepted by many industrial printers, usually alongside outside wound.

Check your printer's specification sheet or the roll that already works in it. Don't guess — the wrong winding prints nothing.
