Sato thermal transfer ribbon sizes and windings change with the model. The CL4NX Plus, CL6NX Plus, CL4NX, CL6NX and S84-ex take either winding, with rolls up to 600m. The CL4NX Plus, CL6NX Plus and S84-ex are documented with a 1 inch core, and the WS4 takes 300m on 1 inch or 100m on ½ inch. The CT4-LX and the CG desktops take 100m on a ½ inch core, wound outside only. The CL408e, CL412e and M84Pro take inside wound ribbon only, 450m on 1 inch. Where Sato's documents state no value, the table says so.

Which Sato thermal transfer ribbon for which label
The label decides the grade, not the printer. Find your label material below, then open the grade for its specification. Wax suits paper labels, wax-resin suits coated paper and light synthetics, and resin suits polyester, polypropylene and other films.
| Label material | Ribbon family | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Uncoated paper | Wax | CW-11 |
| Coated paper labels | Wax | CW-12 |
| Coated paper | Wax-resin | CW-15, CW-20, CW-22; CW-25 (harsh); CW-30 (heavy duty) |
| Polyester (PET) labels | Wax-resin | CW-20, CW-22, CW-25, CW-30 |
| Polypropylene (PP) labels | Wax-resin | CW-22, CW-25, CW-30 |
| Polyester (PET) labels | Resin | CW-28, CW-33, CW-66 |
| Polypropylene (PP) labels | Resin | CW-28, CW-66 |
| Polyimide labels | Resin | CW-28, CW-33 |
| Metal-effect labels | Resin | CW-33 |
| Cleanroom-grade labels | Resin | CW-66 |
| Nylon satin ribbon labels | Wash care | CW-60 |
CW-30 works from -40°C to +80°C, CW-33 withstands sterilisation, CW-66 is chemical-free and suits cleanroom and food-contact labelling, and CW-15 is our eco, low-emission wax-resin. Test the full cycle on your own labels, and ask us to confirm your Sato model.
How Sato's industrial and desktop printers differ for ribbon
Sato printers do not share a single winding rule, so check the model before you reorder. The industrial CL4NX Plus and CL6NX Plus take ribbon wound either way with no setting change, and so do the original CL4NX and CL6NX. The WS4 desktop takes either winding on its supply side. The CT4-LX and CG4 desktops take outside wound ribbon only. The older CL408e, CL412e and M84Pro take inside wound ribbon only.
Cores and roll lengths split the same way. The CL4NX Plus and CL6NX Plus use a 1 inch core and rolls up to 600m, with a maximum roll diameter of 90mm. The WS4 takes two rolls: 300m on a 1 inch core or 100m on a ½ inch core. The CT4-LX and CG4 take 100m on a ½ inch core. The CL408e, CL412e and M84Pro take 450m on a 1 inch core.
Ribbon widths and lengths on the Sato CL4NX Plus and CL6NX Plus
The CL4NX Plus takes ribbon from 39.5mm to 128mm wide. The CL6NX Plus takes 59mm to 177mm, and we slit up to 160mm. The 600m roll is the maximum, not a fixed size: Sato's datasheet lowers it to 450m at the narrowest 39.5mm width, and to 300m in Micro Label Print Mode. If you print narrow labels on a CL4NX Plus, ask for a roll length that suits that width instead of assuming 600m.
Both printers accept ribbon wound inside or outside. Sato's datasheet puts it as face-in or face-out with no setting change required, and shows no optional part.
The original Sato CL4NX and CL6NX, and the S84-ex
The original CL4NX and CL6NX also take ribbon wound either way, in rolls up to 600m, or 450m at the CL4NX's narrowest width of 39.5mm. Sato's manual for them describes the take-up as coreless and does not state a core size for the supply roll, so check the core of the roll you have now. The Plus models are the ones documented with a 1 inch core. The S84-ex print engine, also discontinued, takes a 1 inch core, 600m rolls and either winding.
Inside wound only: the Sato CL408e, CL412e and M84Pro
These are the Sato models where an outside wound roll will not do. Sato's documents give the CL408e and CL412e as wound face-in, on a 1 inch core, in rolls of 450m, and the M84Pro the same way. The CL408e and CL412e are discontinued Sato models, but they still need ribbon. If you order by size alone you can receive the wrong winding. Say inside wound when you order, give the printer model, and keep the width at or below the 111mm Sato lists as the maximum.
Finding the right ribbon for your Sato model
Check the old roll first: width, length, core size and which side carries the ink. Then find your model in the table above. For the full picture, Sato's online manual has a Usable Ribbon page for the CL4NX Plus and CL6NX Plus with width, length and winding.
On the WS4 and CG4 desktops the last letters of the model name matter. TT means thermal transfer and takes ribbon. DT means direct thermal: the WS408DT, WS412DT, CG408DT and CG412DT print on heat-sensitive labels and take no ribbon, as do the FX3-LX and WS2. If you are not sure which version you own, tell us the full model name before you order.
One WS4 detail is worth knowing. Sato's manual says the supply side takes coated side in or out, but the take-up hub must be coated side out.
Which grade for pharma, food and cold-chain labels on a Sato
Pharma and food work on a Sato is mostly batch codes, expiry dates and date codes that must stay readable after handling. Start with the label: on coated paper, wax-resin is the usual step up from wax. CW-22 is listed for pharmaceutical batch labels on its product page, and CW-20 and CW-25 are also listed for coated paper. On polyester the wax-resin options are CW-20, CW-22, CW-25 and CW-30, and on polypropylene CW-22, CW-25 and CW-30.
If the label goes into a freezer, CW-30 works from -40°C to +80°C. Test the full cycle on your own labels: print, freeze, return to room temperature, scan. If the label is sterilised, CW-33 is the resin that withstands sterilisation. For polyester or polypropylene labels that must be chemical-free, CW-66 is our chemical-free resin, and it also suits cleanroom and food-contact labelling. For plain paper logistics labels, wax such as CW-11 is enough.
The ribbon is half of the pair. The label material and adhesive set the limit as well, so run a sample through your own test before ordering volume.
Ordering ribbon for a Sato printer

Standard sizes have no minimum order, and we send a free sample so you can test on your own Sato. Widths run from 25mm to 160mm and lengths from 50m to 600m, on ½ inch or 1 inch cores, notched if needed. MSDS is available on request.
Technical notes
Sato ribbon compatibility details
Winding direction varies by Sato model. The CL4NX Plus, CL6NX Plus and WS4 take inside- or outside-wound ribbon with no setting change; the CT4-LX and CG4 take outside-wound only; the older CL408e, CL412e and M84Pro take inside-wound only. Always give us your Sato model when ordering. CW-series ribbons are available in both inside wound and outside wound configurations.
Sato makes barcode label printers, from desktop to industrial. The models here are the ones whose ribbon size, core and winding we have confirmed from Sato's own documents.
Sato ribbon: common questions
Which ribbon for a Sato CL4NX Plus?+
The CL4NX Plus takes a 1 inch core, ribbon 39.5mm to 128mm wide, rolls up to 600m and a maximum roll diameter of 90mm. It accepts inside or outside wound ribbon with no setting change, so choose the grade by label: wax for paper, wax-resin for coated paper and light synthetics, resin for polyester and polypropylene.
Do Sato printers take inside or outside wound ribbon?+
It depends on the model. The CL4NX Plus, CL6NX Plus, CL4NX, CL6NX and WS4 take either winding. The CT4-LX and CG4 take outside wound only. The CL408e, CL412e and M84Pro take inside wound only. Give us your model and we match the winding.
What ribbon does a Sato CL408e or CL412e use?+
Inside wound ribbon on a 1 inch core, in rolls of 450m, up to 111mm wide. Sato's documents list these printers as face-in only, so say inside wound when you order.
What is the longest ribbon roll for a Sato CL4NX Plus?+
600m, but Sato's datasheet gives 450m at the narrowest width of 39.5mm and 300m in Micro Label Print Mode. The maximum roll diameter is 90mm.
Which ribbon for a Sato WS408TT or WS412TT?+
The WS4 takes two rolls, both 40mm to 110mm wide: 300m on a 1 inch core or 100m on a ½ inch core. The supply side takes coated side in or out, and the take-up hub must be coated side out. Check the core of your old roll before ordering.
Does a Sato CT4-LX or CG408TT take a 300m roll?+
Sato lists only 100m rolls on a ½ inch core for the CT4-LX and CG4, wound outside only. The CT4-LX takes ribbon 45mm to 111mm wide and the CG4 56mm to 110mm.
Do the Sato WS408DT, CG408DT and FX3-LX need a ribbon?+
No. DT means direct thermal, so these printers print on heat-sensitive labels and take no ribbon. The thermal transfer versions of the WS4 and CG4 end in TT, such as the WS408TT and CG408TT.
Which ribbon for Sato pharma batch and expiry labels?+
On coated paper, wax-resin such as CW-22 (listed for pharmaceutical batch labels), CW-20 or CW-25. On polyester or polypropylene, CW-22, CW-25 or CW-30, or a resin such as CW-28. If labels are sterilised, test CW-33. Always run your own sample through your own test before ordering volume.
What ribbon width does a Sato CL6NX Plus take?+
59mm to 177mm on a 1 inch core, inside or outside wound, in rolls up to 600m. We slit widths up to 160mm.
Is there a free sample for Sato ribbon, and a minimum order?+
Yes to the sample, and standard sizes have no minimum order. Send the full printer model, label width, core, winding and label material.
Which ribbon for a Sato CL4NX or CL6NX, not the Plus?+
Sato's manual for the original CL4NX and CL6NX says they take ribbon wound either way, in rolls up to 600m, or 450m at the CL4NX's narrowest width of 39.5mm. The CL4NX takes ribbon 39.5mm to 128mm wide and the CL6NX 59mm to 177mm. The manual does not state a core size for the supply roll, so check the core of your old roll or send us the model.
What ribbon does a Sato S84-ex take?+
Sato's datasheet gives a 1 inch core and rolls up to 600m, or 450m under 39.5mm width, wound face in or face out with no setting change, and a roll diameter up to 108mm. The S84-ex is discontinued, so send us the width of your old roll and we match it.
Which Sato printers take a ½ inch ribbon core?+
Sato lists a ½ inch core for the CT4-LX, CG4 and CG2 desktops, with 100m rolls wound outside only, and for the WS4, which also takes 300m on a 1 inch core. The CL4NX Plus, CL6NX Plus, S84-ex, CL408e, CL412e and M84Pro industrials take a 1 inch core.
Can I use ribbon from another maker in a Sato printer?+
Sato's datasheets recommend Sato's own consumables. Ribbon from another maker can work when it matches what the printer is built for: width, length, core, winding and a grade that suits your label. Take those from the table above, then run our free sample on your own Sato printer before you order volume. Ask us to confirm your model.
